It probably depends a lot on "what" you are recording. Most are subtle but some such as the UA 610A are extremely colorful sounding. But if i want some "vibe" I might consider recording with a little coloration of a Unison modeled plugin. It is generally subtle and many times I just use the stock UAD preamp which is a nice clean sound. The Unison preamps basically model the distortion characteristics of the original hardware and also allow you to record with eq and compression (depending on what model you get) if you desire to do so.

Think of it the same way as pushing it on console in to red. Usually UAD is ok with emulating preamp thing. Read you have to add more gain in to PRE and then compensate this when signal comes out of plugin. will usually get you less subtle and more dominant effect if you "drive" them in.
These are really super subtle things but adding such plugin which is emulating preamp etc. Welcome to the world of audio and subtle things.
I'm a self taught producer so there is a lot I don't know so I may be missing something but can someone explain to me what's so great about uad's preamp plugins compared to my solid eq plugin? I like them all but the thing is that I'm comparing it with a dry track that I've added a plugin that I already have (solid eq) and I seem to be able to get an almost exact sound with just an eq.
